Academic Coaching Open House

Two students look at web site with Amy Chapin
Students attending the ACS Open House look at the new web site on Thursday, March 11th.

On Thursday, March 11, Amy hosted the Grand Opening of Academic Coaching Services in her new digs at 18 S Lake St, Grayslake, IL. More than 70 students and their family members, area education and business professionals, and friends stopped in to network with Amy in her office, freshly painted in motivating hues, carpeted for warmth, and decked out with all the important and fun tools that she uses to help students succeed.

Amy would like to thank everyone who helped to furnish the office, cater and prepare for the open house, and generally support her work in helping students develop "strategies for success."

What Is Academic Coaching?

Academic Coaching is more than tutoring, but less than counseling. As a coach, my overall approach is very skills- and strategy-based. I offer students a "game plan" for success in school. This game plan may be different for each person, depending on age, social development, academic achievement, adaptive skills and time constraints. Sometimes this plan involves direct teaching of subject matter or a key strategy. Other times it involves demonstrating to the student, through guided questioning, what he/she already knows.

It always means taking a view of the student in the context of his/her whole life and setting academic and other goals to meet the presented need(s).
