Application--Drew Chapin Memorial Scholarship for Change
Qualifications
Applicants must be District 127 Central seniors with strong interpersonal skills who have a history of participating in extra-curricular school and/or community activities and possess an aptitude or interest in languages and world cultures.
The ideal candidate for this scholarship brings humor, energy, hope and compassion to everyday projects and every human interaction. This person is knowledgeable about national and international social problems and has a personal philosophy about what action(s) he/she might take to improve some aspect of our world. We are in search of pragmatic realists, rather than idealists, who understand the importance of both formal education and experiential learning.
Requirements
- Submit a letter of recommendation from one of your faculty members that speaks directly to your interpersonal skills. A teacher recommendation form is available for you to offer them.
- Write a 500 word essay addressing one of the following prompts:
- Address a current issue of global concern and explain its personal effect on you. Give background on the issue, but also feel free to speak to its political, religious, financial, or educational impact.
- Describe your experience with a foreign culture or language. How have these experiences changed your world view? How will this knowledge affect your future?
- If this scholarship money were to be donated to a specific cause or organization rather than to be used for a scholarship, to what cause do you feel it should be donated? Why do you feel this is something that should be supported?
- Complete the student application form, available in GCHS Guidance Office, and submit it with your essay and recommendation.
